Wolf Comparison Chart-HUGE by HDevers Wolf Comparison Chart-HUGE by HDevers
Use at your own risk! I will no longer be editing or giving a single fuck about these charts.

NOTE: The images used to create this were not personally taken by me, but are either creative commons images or images I have permission to use. They are for educational purposes only! Please do not post elsewhere as you have not painstakingly contacted each copyright holder to ask for permission or I have searched for them myself!!

If there is a species missing, it is because there were not any good quality free-use/creative commons photos available. (you should also check my other charts for the species you are looking for)

Comparison Chart Directory:

I couldn't get all the subspecies because they didn't all have pictures :(
I did most though.

I think there might be some confusion about the eastern wolf (aka algonquin wolf, Canis lycaon?). Wikipedia and most recent information I've read states that no 'pure' eastern wolves are black or white, most of them a "timber" colouration, except with more reddish brown than most north american gray wolves. They should also be intermediate between gray wolves and coyotes in size. But still, in wikimedia commons etc, I see plenty of alleged eastern wolves that do not look like the description. I am guessing they belong to Canis lupus, or be hybridized with them: rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.or…
See also information here:…

Also, the generic gray wolf you have in top is of course several different individuals, but I would guess a lot of those photos are from Yellowstone? At least from North America. If you should have just a generic gray wolf, then I guess that would be the nominal subspecies: the Eurasian wolf (Canis lupus lupus).

But yeah, anyway, great work. :)

These are so great!  Would we be able to reference them for our own colorations?  I was thinking of compiling a similar chart, but you've already done it so well!

Great reference.  I'm glad you've put these together.

Why have Ethiopian wolves been included, and not coyotes and golden jackals? The latter two are more closely related to the grey wolf than the Ethiopian wolf is.

By the way, "grey wolf" refers to Canis lupus as a whole, not a particular subspecies (see here: [link] ). All the wolves you've shown (except the Ethiopian) are grey wolves. The one you have on the top is probably just another Mackenzie valley wolf.

The jackals are on another chart. I chose to include the ethiopian wolf for it's namesake. It's not necessarily the relation I'm concerned about as much as people drawing wolves exactly the same. I'd have included the maned wolf had there been any decent creative commons images.
I realized the mistake with the grey wolf, I just haven't gotten around to changing it.

Both the golden jackal and coyote have alternative names with "wolf" in it (e.g. Prairie wolf and reed wolf). You could put them in that way, and have the actual names in brackets underneath.

Just in case you want to redo it.

Yes, but they are not common names. The majority of people know them simply as the names you stated :) Thanks for the suggestion though, I think I'll add alternate names that to the artist comment section when I have time to go through it all.
